A Guide to Common Wedding Music

Musical services

BY DEANNA STEPHENS

Congratulations to you on your upcoming wedding!

There are three or four main points to consider musically when planning a wedding: the processional, the signing of the registry, the recessional, and an optional hymn or two. You might also want a soloist to sing a selection of your choice. Please refer to the chart below for possible music selections for the four categories listed below.

1) The processional is often meditative and more ceremonious compared to the recessional. However, many brides want some sort of option for a fanfare or dramatic moment for entry. Some couples choose to have a separate piece played for the entry of the bridesmaids versus the bride herself.

2) During the signing of the registry the organist will play something in the background to fill the audio space. It's usually something much more subdued compared to the recessional. Here is where you can get creative. Almost anything will work, including a congregational hymn. In fact, there is one hymn that is a sung blessing from the guests to the bride and groom.

3) A congregational hymn does not have to be done, but it is something many couples choose.

4) The recessional is often more celebratory.
